Anthony Plonczynski-Figueroa

For the last twenty years, Anthony Plonczynski-Figueroa has committed himself to work on behalf of first-generation, low-income, minority families to ensure equal opportunity for all. A Polish-Puerto Rican American, Anthony’s deep passion for educational, civic, and political issues developed while attending East High School in Rochester, NY, and participating in the Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI). A program for students who want to become educators.

A TRIO alumnus of the Ronald E. McNair Program, Anthony served 12 years at his alma mater, the University of Rochester, directing five TRIO programs, UB, UBMS, ETS, McNair, and SSS. Anthony has served as Board Member at Large, Treasurer, and Western, NY Regional Representative for AEEE. 

In March of 2020, Anthony embarked on a new journey to bridge his educational background with his political work, becoming a Regional Political Organizer in the Rochester/Elmira areas for the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). Serving out of the Office of the President, he runs and implements NYSUT’s political program assisting over 200 local unions and close to 60,000 members in becoming politically active. As Regional Political Organizer for the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), one of the country’s largest K-12 and higher education educators’ unions, Anthony has worked on the front lines of the fight for equitable education for all students. This experience has allowed him to work with national organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA) to advocate on students’ behalf, working towards better public policy and better-elected advocates. 

PAST PRESIDENT

Jackasha I. Wiley

Jackasha I. Wiley is the Senior Director for Pre-College Initiatives & College Success within the Division of Diversity, Inclusion & Community Engagement. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in History and Women and Gender Studies and a Masters of Education in Social Studies Education from the Graduate School of Education. Ms. Wiley was a NJ high school Social Studies and Financial Literacy teacher.  She is an active member of Kappa Delta Phi International Honor Society in Education and serves as the President for The Association for Equality and Excellence in Education (AEEE), a regional education equity advocate association and Board Member for the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE). Her passion lies in youth academic achievement and success. Along with being actively involved in urban communities through mentoring and volunteering, she also conducts research on African American males in (urban) education and has presented her research at various conferences.

PRESIDENT ELECT

Angelica Benitez

Angélica Benítez currently provides leadership for the federal TRIO grant programs at Rider University, which include the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and the Student Support Services Program.  For nearly 32 years, Ms. Benítez has dedicated herself to advancing higher education for first-generation, underrepresented and under-resourced students.  This mission has been fulfilled through the comparable New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOP) and TRIO’s collegiate-level programs.

Having secured student best-practices and impactful service through her vigorous work in EOP, she transitioned to TRIO to aid in establishing the first SSS Program at Rider University.  Thus, yielding greater support services and counseling to a growing first-generation population.  After 11 years of impacting student success, Ms. Benítez expanded her trajectory by launching and directing the SSS project at Bloomfield College.  Inaugurating comprehensive programs became a notable talent as Rider sought her return to establish their second TRIO grant, the McNair Scholars Program.  To date, Angélica Benítez has provided TRIO with twenty-nine years of service while fostering student persistence and achievement from the baccalaureate to the doctorate.  

Her career has consistently reflected her passion to impact people, aide students, breakdown barriers, and champion access and opportunity – especially for those with whom she shares the first-generation, low-income narrative.  Alongside her professional duties, Ms. Benítez has maintained community involvement comprising of 17 years on the Board of the NJ Hispanic Association for Higher Education, Inc., to include stewardship for the office of presidency and recognition by President Bill Clinton’s Education Commissioner for championing progress and inclusion among NJ Latino Educators.  Likewise, Ms. Benítez is a longtime, good-standing member of the Association for Equality and Excellence in Education, Inc. (AEEE); and respectively, the Council for Opportunity in Education.  She has actively served the AEEE Board as District Representative, Board Member at Large, Conference Chair, COE Policy Chair, and Co-Chair of AEEE’s 40th Anniversary Celebratory Banquet.  

Board Secretary Dr. Christina Chisholm

SECRETARY

Dr. Christina Chisholm

Christina Chisholm, Ph.D. is responsible for the organization, direction and daily operations of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program and THRIVE Student Support Services Program; a Federal TRIO program designed to increase the number of first- generation, low-income and/or historically underrepresented students in doctoral programs. Prior to joining Rutgers University, Dr. Chisholm served as the Assistant Director of the McNair program at Hunter College, CUNY. Dr Chisholm has amassed close to 10 years of experience within higher education, coordinating academic and student support, along with managing summer and postbaccalaureate research programs. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and proud alumna of Lincoln University, PA where she holds a BS in Chemistry. She earned a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

TREASURER

Dr. Heather Hagenbuch

Dr. Heather Hagenbuch has been working with the TRIO programs for ten years and been a member of the Association for Equality and Excellence for almost as long. Currently, Heather serves as the Assistant Director for the McNair Scholars program at the University at Buffalo, and the Treasurer for AEEE. In the past, Heather has served as the chair of the UB Professional Staff Senate Committee for Inclusion and Diversity, executive secretary for the UBCCC board of directors, and Treasurer for the University advisement council (UAC). As a member of the AEEE board, Heather has served the organization in a variety of ways such as chairing the planning for the 2015 and 2021 conferences, serving on the membership committee, and assisting with a variety of activities. Dr. Hagenbuch completed her PhD in 2021 after the acceptance of her dissertation entitled “Celebrating the First: Improving Outcomes for First-Generation college students,” a study designed to celebrate the work of TRIO programs.
